Celebrate the News ~ Santos Meets Dion; Defeats Drugs

SUPER PERCUSSIONIST AND SINGER, SANTOS, IS THE LATEST GUEST ON FRONT PAGE RADIO
He tells the astonishing story of his rise to fame and his battle with drugs and now, how he is ministering through music to addicts around the world

SANTA ANA, CA. (ANS) -- Super percussionist and singer, Santos, is (talking aobut) his dramatic story of his rise to fame in the music world and his subsequent battle with drugs.

In a dramatic interview with journalist Dan Wooding, Santos recalled the time when the 200 inmates at the notorious Rikers Island Jail in New York Harbor were restless and were making it clear that they didn't want to be at the service organized by a team from Mike MacIntosh’s “Festival of Life NYC02” outreach. But then they were shocked when a singer and percussion had some straight talking for them.

The Bronx-born Santos, who had previously had a miraculous conversion and deliverance from drug addiction, came up the microphone, looked at the group before him, and said pointedly, “You guys think you are so smart. If you are that smart, how come you are in here?”

The prisoners were stunned. Santos had got there attention and this man, who had been in jail in New York years previously for drug-related offenses, began to preach to them on the topic: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

He got their attention!

As a super percussionist, Santos had toured nationally in the United States with a Who's Who of the music business, such as Weather Report and Fandango, sharing tour dates and stages with The Charlie Daniels Band, The Outlaws, Pure Prairie League, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Moby Grape, Judas Priest, and the Marshall Tucker Band.

Santos said that he learned to play Latin percussion on the streets, with groups on the “stoops,” a NYC term for hanging out on the front porch of a house. “I hung out in these strong ethnic neighborhoods,” he said. “They took me in as one of their own -– I had a name like Santos, but I looked so German! After a while I was asked to play in clubs with a lot of R&B bands in the neighborhood. My first break came when I was asked to play percussion with Charles Earland on the same bill with The Jazz Crusaders at Carnegie Hall. What a place to start a career! After that, I became a member of the Charles Earland Sextet and we toured nationally with the likes of George Benson, Les McCann, Jimmy Smith, and Stanley Turrentine. I also did a short stint with Top Jazz ensemble Weather Report back in there early days.”

But he had a terrible secret that was destroying his life -- he was addicted to drugs, a habit that nearly had him sentenced to life imprisonment. But then a miracle began to happen in his life when former teenage idol Dion DiMucci, who had such hits as “A Teenager in Love,” “Runaround Sue” and “The Wanderer,” told him to totally give his life to Jesus Christ. He did and later was completely delivered from his habit at Calvary Ranch in the rodeo town of Lakeside, a suburb of beautiful San Diego, California, which offers 24 hour-a-day care for every resident.

Now Santos has produced a new album called “South of the Bronx” – available at the end of July -- in which in pays tribute to the music he learned at Calvary Ranch, where he was discipled and blessed by the ministry of Pastor Tom McAloon who, along with his Paulette, his wife of 29 years, founded the center in 1975 after starting three Rescue Missions in the most dangerous parts of San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. In a family like setting, Tom and Paulette live on the Ranch along with the staff to provide hands on leadership and support. Santos says that the time he spent at The Ranch changed his life forever.

“Calvary Ranch is a testimony of people living the gospel through pure and simple devotion to Christ,” said Santos. “At first, the simplicity of the country/gospel songs sung there was not my style of music, but I stood in amazement as the Lord used those very songs to heal my broken heart."

Since Santos’ time at Calvary Ranch, the Lord has done amazing things. He has put him back in the ministry, opened up many doors to help others and share his testimony – even at Rikers Island – as well as giving him a beautiful wife what he calls “a truly abundant life.”

He then explained how the new CD came about. “While singing in Midland, Texas a few years back the thought struck me to do a Country CD – a totally foreign thought for New York guy from the Bronx who loves to sing Doo-Wop music,” he said. “As I prayed and thought about it, and with encouragement from my West Texas brothers the idea began to come together. I contacted the producer of Street Corner Symphony, JL Seville, and he loved the idea. We started work about six months ago and in just a few short weeks the project will be completed.

“South of the Bronx is a country Gospel/western CD that has a little New York flavor to it. We used some of the best session players in the business to capture that pure and simple sound.”

The CD, which Santos has lovingly dedicated to Calvary Ranch, includes some old-time country/gospel songs like:
* Turn Your Radio On
* Love Lifted Me
* May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You, which was originally done by Bing Crosby

Some sweet ballads like:
* The Lighthouse
* For Those Tears
* Lord, I don’t Understand, (which received an Honorable Mention from Billboard) written by Santos’ friend Paulette McAloon

Some real hay shakers like:
* Victory in Jesus
* Give My Oil In My Lamp

“We have also included ‘Thanks to Calvary’ – a classic Bill Gaither song originally sung by the late great southern Gospel Hall of Famer, George Younce and The Cathedrals,” said Santos. “What an awesome banner story/song for the Calvary Ranch recovery program.”

As with all of Santos’ CD’s, this one will also include resources to get help for anyone addicted.

As Santos always says to those who are struggling with addictions, “Don’t wait -- the life you save will be yours.”

For those who cannot listen to the program live in Southern California, it will also be webcast on www.kwve.com at 5:00 PM (Pacific Time) each Sunday and then the latest show will be posted on the website www.kwvenews.news where you can also listen to the latest show by logging in and then clicking on Front Page Radio.

Magic Transitor Radio ~ Radio Delilah Rocks America to Sleep

Radio Delilah Rocks America to Sleep

How a woman of faith redeems a notorious name
by Greg Asimakoupoulos

Radio Delilah Rocks America to Sleep

Quite unlike old Samson's lover,
she is honest, wise and kind.
She gives comfort to love's victims
and clear vision when love's blind.

To those bound by guilt's deception,
to those shorn by loneliness,
this Delilah speaks compassion
with advice that's aimed to bless.

Though her life is hardly perfect,
though she's failed more than she's won,
she's a means of grace to millions
when each day is nearly done.

Yes, Delilah has a calling.
She routinely speaks of God
and His undeserved acceptance
that redeems rejects and frauds.

From her radio cathedral,
she gives homilies each night.
And she hears heart-felt confessions
from the lovelorn and uptight.

This unorthodox good shepherd
claims a growing faithful flock
who feel nurtured and protected
through her music, wit and talk.

[Actual letter from Delilah in response to this poem]
Thank you for the kind words!

Trust me, for there are many areas of my life that are still in keeping with my namesake's demeanor...

But I praise my Lord each and every day that He loves me unconditionally, That His blood was shed for my sins, That He paid the price on the cross that I might not have to pay the price for my many mistakes, sins and short comings... That He has blessed me beyond my wildest dreams and allowed me the privilege to enter into His presence... That I have beautiful children who know Him in a real way... And that my life is filled with amazing friends and lots of love.

Should He call me home tomorrow, I will know that I have been blessed more than any person I have ever met, because I know the condition of my heart and I know I don't deserve any of the wonderful things I have enjoyed. But I hope He allows me to stick around another 55 years and have fun on this planet that He created just for our good pleasure!

If you should share any words about me with your congregation, share that I am a sinner amongst sinners...I have compromised my values and myself dozens of times, even after having made a commitment to the Lord...and yet I know His love is the greatest force in the universe...and I will ever praise His name.
Delilah (my older brother's name was Matthew Mark Luke; my parents had a sick sense of humor...)

Best Wishes, Delilah

Celebrate the News ~ T Bone: From Dylan to Bono to C.S. Lewis

T-Bone Burnett (Photo: Columbia Records)

LOS ANGELES, CA (ANS) -- Joseph Henry Burnett is not a Rock Superstar whose name is on everyone's lips, but he's been having a large but quiet impact on popular culture. What are his claims to fame? He's a singer and song writer who toured with Bob Dylan's legendary Rolling Thunder Revue in the mid-1970's and later produced groups like Counting Crows, The Wallflowers, BoDeans, Los Lobos, Bruce Cockburn and others.

More recently, he produced the music for films like “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and the Johnny Cash biography, “Walk the Line.”

T-Bone Burnett is a Christian, and he doesn't hide that fact. He doesn't have to because he's not a raging fundamentalist, but rather a thoughtful evangelical who is keenly aware there no false lines between the sacred and the secular. He is as happy quoting the lines from one of his songs as he is quoting from the works of G.K. Chesterton, C.S. Lewis or Thomas Merton.

After the tour with Dylan, he teamed up with Rolling Thunder alumni Steven Soles and David Mansfield to form the Alpha Band, and had other collaborations with the B-52s, Ry Cooder, Bono of U2 and Elvis Costello. He has been the executive music producer for such films as “Walk the Line,” “The Ladykillers,” “Cold Mountain,” and “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.”

He writes and arranges some of the songs in these movies too.

Burnett was raised in a Christian home, according to a Radix magazine interview, but formally became a follower of Jesus as an 11 year-old at a Christian sports camp. An invitation to receive Jesus was given, and he responded because, as he said, “Naturally I wanted to be saved.” He felt this act was an expression that came out of an intense religious need he had in his life at the time, a need which he has experienced several times since. Burnett said, “At different times in my life I met God from a different point of view.”

Burnett is concerned about individual spirituality and thinks religious institutions, like those of the religious right, have let Jesus down. He told Radix magazine, “I think it’s too late for institutions. Christ was saying that every moment touches eternity, every moment we live in. Now is the acceptable time of salvation. That’s because here, this moment, right now, is an eternal moment. And you can touch it. Institutions are irrelevant at this point. As soon as you come up with another institution, it’s sucked into the same vortex, manipulated in another way, turned into just what it’s always been.”

He said, “For the last 20 years I have been endeavoring to truly be in the world but not of the world. But I'm horribly of the world and I screw up,” according to Radix magazine. He added, “We are Christians because we are redeemed. People like myself, Bruce Cockburn, Bono and Bob Dylan have tried to bring love and perspective and Christ to people who can't hear Jerry Falwell.”

Burnett shares his faith wherever he goes. He reportedly had a strong influence on Bob Dylan's conversion in the mid-70s. Today, Burnett is reluctant to speak for Dylan about the status of his faith, except to say the man is following the path. According to journalist Mark Feldbush, Burnett said, “I've made it a policy not to talk about Bob Dylan. But I will say this; his career has been about Bob Dylan's search for God.”

T-Bone Burnett is aware of his own path as well. He wants to put spirituality in the forefront, not the institutional aspects of the faith. He wants Christian faith to have an impact on our culture. He wants to offer the gospel in understandable terms through his music. As Burnett says, “You can sing about the Light, or you can sing about what you see because of the Light. I prefer the latter.”

Rick Wakeman to perform The New Gospels at Rochester Cathedral in June
By Dan Wooding

ROCHESTER, UK (ANS) -- Rick Wakeman, the legendary keyboardist with the British super-group, YES, will again be performing his magnificent oratorio on the life of Christ called The New Gospels in Rochester Cathedral, England’s second oldest cathedral, on Friday June 9th at 8pm.

Rick will be joined by Ramon Remedios (Tenor) and Garfield Morgan (Narration) and The English Chamber Choir under the direction of Guy Protheroe.

Wakeman, who many believe is the world’s greatest rock keyboardist, has been a Christian since his childhood when he was baptized and became a Sunday School teacher at South Harrow Baptist Church.

In a recent interview with ANS, he explained how he came to write The New Gospels.

“It all started when I moved to Camberley in Surrey,” he began. “We had becomes friends with the minister of the United Reformed Church and it transpired his church was a little short in their fund for a new organ and so I was asked if I would do an evening in the church to raise a bit more money towards the cause.

“I wanted it to be a bit different so set about writing four pieces. One piece based on each of the four Gospels.

“I wrote the music and realized that it would need a classical tenor to sing them and so contacted Ramon who I had seen pe rform in London a few weeks previously. He asked to hear the music, which I sent him. He said he really liked it and we got together and rehearsed and then did the charity evening at the church.

“After the performance Ramon and I had dinner and he asked me what was going to happen now. I asked him what he meant and he said, ‘Well it can't finish here. Are you going to record it or what’? I replied that there wasn't enough music for a recording and so he said, ‘Write some more then’.

“So I did. I wrote four pieces for each of the four Gospels and then we recorded all the music. For me though, because of the very low budget we had, I was never happy with the resulting recording but already churches and cathedrals were asking for performances and so I let it run and in fact we did quite a few performances including a televised special of a live performance recorded in an outdoor amphitheatre in Caesarea, Israel, in 1988.

“Eventually though I was so dissatisfied with how the live performances sounded, I stopped doing them. I knew it needed a complete re-write and said to myself that one day I would get around to doing it.

“This all changed when my good friend Roy Castle called. Roy was dying of cancer and had started a wonderful fund to build a cancer hospital and research centre in Liverpool. He asked me if I would perform The Gospels at Liverpool Cathedral for the charity. I apologized and said I didn't perform it anymore as it needed completely re-writing and didn't have the time to do this. He replied that ‘I had a lot more time than he did!’ We were great friends and I felt very humbled by this.

“I took three months off and did nothing but work on the re-write. Roy had passed away by the time we did the performance in front of 3,000 people packed into the cathedral....3001 actually, as I know Roy was there in spirit.”

I then asked Wakeman why he felt that the message of Christ was so important in these days with so much violence going on in the world.

He replied, “I just want people to see Christians as real people, and faith as something that is very real. Sadly some Christians tend to be their own worse enemy. The devil doesn't have to do anything these days. I heard a guy say recently, ‘Christians do all the work for him!’

“I want to show that I am normal with a God given gift...just like everyone else in this world and that the Church does have something to offer to communities and individuals alike.

Wakeman has since performed The New Gospels hundreds of time in some of Britain’s most famous cathedrals and churches and also in the United States when he performed it in several Southern California churches as a benefit for ASSIST Ministries.

Tickets for the Rochester performance are available from the Visitor Information Centre on +44 (0) 1634 843666 or the Cathedral Shop on +44 (0) 1634 811445. For an additional £5 (sterling) you can attend an after show reception to meet the performers.

Rochester Cathedral has a history of over 1,400 years of worship, history and architecture. It has glorious Norman architecture in the Nave and Crypt, and one of the finest Romanesque facades in the country. Among its many treasures is the magnificent 14th century Chapter Library door.

The first real fresco in an English cathedral for over 800 years was dedicated in 2004 and is on view in the north nave transept. The size and richness of this narrative painting by Sergei Fyodorov has drawn many visitors.
