MOUNTAIN LAKES, NJ (ANS) -- The Man in Black - suffered a "very painful life" but was a "genuine Christian." That's the view of British writer, Steve Turner, who has written the authorized biography of Cash called THE MAN CALLED CASH: The Life, Love And Faith Of An American Legend.

Johnny Cash, the Man in Black, performs in 1996

Cash, 71, the singer and songwriter, had suffered from serious health problems in recent years. Mr. Cash had had bouts of bronchitis and pneumonia, had diabetes, and also had a little known neurological condition called the Shy-Drager syndrome.

Johnny Cash died in Nashville, Tennessee on Sept. 12, 2003 of the "complications of diabetes," four months after the death of his wife, June Carter Cash, 73, herself a member of a legendary musical family.

Despite worldwide acclaim, the author of his authorized biography, Steve Turner told ANS, "Johnny Cash suffered physical, spiritual and mental pain. However, he never gave up. His story illustrates the triumph of life lived with the spirit. For some reason he was given extra suffering, maybe because he was also given extra talent and extra earthly glory. He was one of the few Christians admired across the board even though he never compromised his beliefs."

Now the legacy of Cash lives on in Johnny Cash: Chapter & Verse, a DVD/CD set with music and narration from the Man in Black, which is due Oct. 28 from BiblesOnDVD, a division of The DVD Acquisition And Development Group, Inc.

The $29.95 set features more than 19 hours of Cash's narration of the New King James Version New Testament on DVD, along with a CD of 14 of Cash's gospel hits. On-screen text synchronizes to the audio, with interactive menus allowing access to any book or chapter.

"BiblesOnDVD is very honored and excited to launch this exclusive DVD/CD set featuring the legendary voice of Johnny Cash just in time for Christmas 2008," said David Goodman, president of The DVD Acquisition and Development Group, Inc.

"This amazing gift gives fans a chance to get to know the spiritual side of Johnny Cash and his ability as one of the world's greatest storytellers. We expect Johnny Cash: Chapter & Verse to be a top seller this holiday season."

The DVD includes the special features "Walking the Bible," a Holy Land photo tour, as well as an introduction by John Carter Cash, Johnny Cash's son.
