Keith Moon & Barbara Ann

The Who ...

The best stories belong to drummer Keith Moon who, along with
blowing up hotel toilets for fun, once drove his car into a
swimming pool in the US. Daltrey didn’t see the incident, but
he saw the bill. “It was something like $US56,000. It was the
whole money from the tour,” he says. “We all had to borrow
the money to get home because of the swimming pool incident.

“It went on for years. It’s one of the reasons we’re still
working.” (Big laugh). “We go round fixing things now. We go
round with pots of glue and wallpaper and paint and clean up
hotel rooms, making amends.”

Moon, who died of a drug overdose in 1978, aged 32, always
aspired to be a singer, and Daltrey says he was never happier
than when singing Beach Boys songs.

“He was a mad Beach Boys fan,” Daltrey says of Moon. “He
would have left The Who at the drop of a hat to join The Beach
Boys. “Even at our height, when The Beach Boys were on their
way down and The Who were at the top of the world, if The Beach
Boys had asked him to drum for them, he would have gone. We used
to do Barbara Ann for Keith to keep him happy.

“It’s a wonderful thing to watch. If you ever see a clip of
Keith Moon singing Barbara Ann, there’s pure unadulterated joy
on his face. Everything that music should be. He’s got all the
mischief of a four-year-old and all the joy of every child in
the world.”

Moon would sneak into the studio sometimes when the others were
recording vocals, and at the end of the song Happy Jack,
Townshend can be heard chiding: “I saw you.”

“He was trying to make us all laugh all the way through it,”
Daltrey says. “The song was so silly. It was very hard to take
it that seriously, but we did it so straight. La la la la la,
all prim and proper, so he was desperately trying to make us all
laugh – on every take.”
