After Beach Boys Show, Bruce Johnston Explains "I Write the Songs"

After a rockin, endless summetime fun Beach Boys Show of car tunes, surfing songs and some pet sounds, I had the opportunity to speak with Bruce Johnston, official Beach Boy since 1965. My first meeting with Bruce took place 49 years to the month at his first concert when I was privileged to welcome him back to his birthtown, Chicago.

Part  of this recent conversation was about his mega-hit, Grammy-honored, "I Write The Songs," recorded by Barry Manilow. "Who is the song about," Bruce asked me.

"At first," I replied, "I thought it was about Brian Wilson" (since Bruce had become an integral part of the Beach Boys studio recording ad live concerts for about a decade) ... "but I think it is about God."

He shot back, "You are the only person who got that! It is a hymn." He then proceeded to recite several lines from the song, such as, "I live forever," to indicate the person speaking could only be the uncreated Creator. So, to the many who thought the lyrics were an ego trip for Barry Manilow, at least from the composer's point of view, it was a truth trip for the Author of our salvation (click).
