"One day I will write songs that people will pray to."
Brian Wilson to Andrew Loog Oldham
>I am compiling a list of songs written or covered by the Beach Boys that express or evoke spiritual truths.
>I am not objective; my selections and comments come from a biblical word-view.
>I do not pretend to know what the author's meaning or message unless such has been stated.
"When you meet together, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs,
as you praise the Lord with all your heart."
Saint Paul to the Church
Here is my working list:
OUR PRAYER ~ wordless praise, sometime confession, sometimes joy, other times ...
- Save us by your might; answer our prayer, so that the people you love may be rescued. Psalm 60:5
LET’S GO AWAY FOR AWHILE ~
- Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. Mark's Gospel 6:31
YOU’RE WELCOME ~ a call to worship
- Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him. For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods. Psalm 95:1-3
WAKE THE WORLD ~ an ode to joy; a hymn to the resurrection of Jesus
- Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me will have life even if they die. John 11:25
IN MY ROOM ~ a safe place to pray
- When you pray, you should go into your room and close the door and pray to your Father who cannot be seen. Your Father can see what is done in secret, and he will reward you. Matthew 6:6
MEANT FOR YOU ~ a Psalm-like expression of the peace that transcends mental comprehension
- Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7
YOU STILL BELIEVE IN ME ~ when directed to God, the song becomes a prayer of redemption and hope
- But God shows his great love for us in this way: Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:8
WALKING DOWN THE PATH OF LIFE ~ a hymn expressing the prayer of salvation; touch me, heal me, wash me ... walk with me ... in the constant presence of God
- You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy In Your right hand there are pleasures forever. Psalm 16:11
LET US GO ON ~ "God, please let us go on;" a passionate prayer
- O God, don’t stay away. My God, please hurry to help me. Psalm 71:12
ADD SOME MUSIC TO YOUR DAY ~ A Gospel hymn
- Sing psalms, hymns, spiritual songs...make music in your heart. Ephesians 5:19
MEANT FOR YOU ~ a Psalm-like expression of the peace that transcends rational comprehension
- Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7
LET THE WIND BLOW ~ not about God but a plea to God (who else could tell the wind what to do?)
- “Teacher, don’t you even care that we are all about to die!” Fully awake, he rebuked the storm and shouted to the sea, “Hush! Calm down!” All at once the wind stopped howling and the water became perfectly calm. Then he turned to his disciples and said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Haven’t you learned to trust yet?” Mark 4:39-40
THAT SAME SONG ~
- I heard a sound like massed choirs in Heaven singing, Hallelujah! The salvation and glory and power are God's - his judgments true, his judgments just… Then, more singing: Hallelujah! Revelation 19:1-3
LOVE AND MERCY ~
- But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. Psalm 86:15
I WRITE THE SONGS ~ Bruce Johnston wrote this as a hymn [a personal conversation]
- “The Lord your God is with you, He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
TIL I DIE ~ a lament (“a passionate expression of grief or sorrow; to mourn”)
- I pray to you, O Lord, my rock. Do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you are silent, I might as well give up and die. Psalm 28:1
LITTLE BIRD ~ a parable (a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson; Jesus often used parables to teach truths in the Gospels.)
- Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Matthew 6:26
BE STILL ~ a Psalm-like meditation
- “Be still [“cease striving’], and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” Psalm 46:10

ReplyDeleteGod Did It - a Sunday School sing-a-long of the Gospel Story
{God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we're in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ. Romans 3:24}
From the Brian Wilson / Andy Paley Sessions
Sun rises its a brand new day, the little children run out to play
The new born day sparkles in morning dew
White cloud goes floating by
A baby robin is learning to fly
A honey bees buzzin, signng his song for you
Started out just a little ball of clay
Put us here to sing his praise with every deed in every way
God did it, God did it...
Delivered Daniel from the lion's den
Crucified and rose up again on Easter morn so beautiful and true
Taught us to turn the other cheek; heal the sickness in all the meek
Said forgive them Father for know not what they do
Walked on the water at Galilee
He washed away my sins on the cross at calvary
God did it...he washed my sins away
God made Adam God made eve; had a lot lovin to receive
The greatest story ever told
It's the truth, it's the truth
Hallelujah Hallelujah
Praise the Lord tonight
When he saw what men had done he sent down his only son to Bethlehem the very first Christmas day
Made music to save my soul, rhythm and blues and rock and roll
Glad to say he washed my sins away
He washed my sins away
Washing my, washing my sins away...
