1 of the Most Underrated Beach Boys Songs
According To Mike Love
The Lord's Prayer
'The Beach Boys' Christmas Album', 1964
"'The Lord's Prayer' is something everybody should hear, if they haven't.
It really is a masterpiece.
I think it's probably Brian's best vocal arrangement, period. That's my honest opinion about that. It's completely a cappella, and I sang the bass part on that part, though that thing moved around so much, you couldn't even say it was just a bass part; it was the lowest note in the four parts, anyway.
We played that back for the Wrecking Crew in the studio, and it blew their minds. Bill Medley was there to hear that playback, because the Righteous Brothers were recording in and around Studio 3 at Western Recorders. A couple of months back Bill Medley and I had dinner together, and he told me again how much that arrangement of 'The Lord's Prayer' blew his mind, listening to it. If somebody ever wants to hear four-part harmonies done a cappella in a spiritual song, that's the one to listen to."
