New Bono Interview: Beach Boys, Dylan, Psalm 18, Jesus, , Love ...

Let me ask you about "Summer of Love," which is about Syria and the refugees. Where did that song come from, musically?
There is a guy working with Ryan Tedder, who wrote a beautiful little guitar part. And this was Edge going through his little excitement, saying, "Oh, if you want something, you just ask for it. Like hip-hop, sample it. Sample it, or replay it." It was a great freedom for him. So that was part of the spirit of this record too. It was like, "Let's look in places you don't normally look." And so we got this beautiful mood, and we have this beautiful melodic sort of almost ode to the Beach Boys and the Mamas and the Papas, and then found the twist. And the twist is the west coast of Syria. And not the west coast of Ireland or California, as a lot of people have reviewed it as.

Your song asks, "Jesus, what have you got for me?" Well, what do you think he has got for you?

There is an unbelievable release in letting go. I thought I already had, but this was the next installment in trust. You know, people of faith can be very annoying...

I've learned to try and put time aside to meditate on the day ahead. I don't want to get all religious on your ass, so do forgive me, but if you're interested, this is today's meditation. I will share this with you because it is beautiful and because it might make you smile. Here it comes. This is Psalm 18, and it is one of those psalms of David that has been translated into a modern idiom by this man called Eugene Peterson – great writer.  It goes: "God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him. When I got my act together, he gave me a fresh start. Now, I'm alert to God's ways. I don't take God for granted. Every day I review the ways he works. I try not to miss a trick. I feel put back together, and I'm watching my step. God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes." Isn't that beautiful?

"Our Prayers ~ As Inspired by The Beach Boys"

Phil Miglioratti invited Jeffrey Foskett (The Beach Boys; Brian Wilson Band), Philip Bardowell (Beach Boys Band, Jan & Dean Band), Chuck Girard (Hondells lead singer, Love Song), and Dan Addington (early Dennis Wilson researcher) for a roundtable conversation on the spirituality of the music of The Beach Boys.

Focusing on their personal experiences, they discuss a surprising diversity of songs that include "God Only Knows," "When I Grow Up To Be A Man," "'Til I Die," "You Still Believe in Me," "The Ballad of Ole' Betsy" (no foolin'), "Let The Wind Blow," "Walking Down the Path of Life," "God Did It," "Little Bird," "Be Still, and "Dreamer."   Hear Here>>>

"Everything that I am or will ever be is in the music. If you want to know me, just listen."—Dennis Wilson

About The Book:

40 years since its initial release, Dennis Wilson’s Pacific Ocean Blue, the first solo album by a member of the Beach Boys, is widely regarded as a cult masterpiece, a stark confessional vehicle of naked primal emotion and deep pain. Dreamer: The Making of Dennis Wilson’s Pacific Ocean Blue is the first book devoted to the creation of this seminal rock and roll classic.

Via extensive interviews conducted with many of the record’s main principals numbering songwriting collaborators, engineers, session musicians, record company personnel, management, fellow Beach Boys, friends, family, music writers and more, the 415-page book is structured as an oral history and chronicles the fascinating back story behind this extraordinary album. Decades on, the album has garnered raves in the press with the 2008 CD reissue selected by the likes of Rolling Stone, Mojo and Uncut as reissue of the year.

"BORN-AGAIN BOB DYLAN GOSPEL SONGS WILL CONVERT YOU"

Dylan’s discovered the difference between “religion” and faith.
Rituals without an authentic experience with God are void of the life they were designed
to point us toward. IMHO, his “gospel” period indicates that he got it.

REVIEW ~ The Beach Boys: Wisconsin State Fair (Milwaukee, WI) August 6, 2017

The Beach Boys Wisconsin State Fair (Milwaukee, WI)August 6, 2017

BRIAN ANDERSON
Beach Boy Fan & Prayer For Surf Friend

The main stage evening show on Sunday, August 6, at the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee, Wis., featured the Beach Boys with special guests The Temptations. These Motown legends (with one “classic” member remaining in the line-up) performed their hits, all of which I’m sure everyone knows, plus a few lesser-recognized songs. The old man in me found their set to be a bit too loud (it should never be so loud as to be right at, or into, the “distorted” realm of sound), but the Beach Boys sound quality was just right. I was looking at this Beach Boys performance as maybe being my final time seeing the surviving band. When you add the opportunity I had of seeing Brian Wilson (with Al Jardine) — in the company of Phil Miglioratti — also in Milwaukee this spring, I’ve pretty well covered the original band members within five months. Am I wrong to consider Bruce Johnston as maybe not a “founding” member, but an “original” member? But I digress.

In my opinion, the addition of Jeff Foskett to Mike Love’s traveling Beach Boys is great for the quality of the live music. Seeing Brian Wilson this year, and obviously knowing Brian’s vocal limitations, I feel that Foskette does a better overall job of infusing the “feel of Brian” into the performances. Foskette nails Brian’s falsettos nearly flawlessly, and what I noticed this time was that when he sang the lead on “Darlin’,” his voice seemingly morphed to closely resembled Carl Wilson’s style. I was very impressed with the band’s musicianship and their current interpretation of the tunes we all know so well from memorizing the studio albums for decades.

Mike Love was, well, Mike Love, still performing in top form at age 76. Bruce Johnston did not sing any lead vocals (they did not play “Disney Girls [1957],” which is sometimes his highlight). In fact, if you didn’t know who he is, you probably wouldn’t have paid any attention to him throughout the show. Perhaps he was not feeling up to singing lead this evening. Other vocals were handled by lead guitarist Scott Totten, most impressively on “The Ballad of Ole’ Betsy,” a song I had never heard performed live before. That was one of the highlights of the night. Totten also sang lead on “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” later in the show. Bassist Brian Eichenberger sang lead on “Then I Kissed Her” later in the show. While hearing Al Jardine sing this song with his almost perfectly-preserved 1965 voice is always a plus, Eichenberger’s version was spot-on as far as an audio-authentic version.

The only snag on the evening was that a rainstorm popped up from nowhere about 2/3 into the show, and much of the crowd scrambled behind/beneath the grandstands. I, of course, armed with an umbrella against the wind and rain, stayed in my seat to the end, not wanting to miss something I may never see/hear again. I hope I get the chance to see them live again, but at this point with the original members’ ages, nothing is guaranteed. See them when you get a chance!

"Underrated" ~ a Prayer "Masterpiece"

1 of the Most Underrated Beach Boys Songs

According To Mike Love

The Lord's Prayer

'The Beach Boys' Christmas Album', 1964

"'The Lord's Prayer' is something everybody should hear, if they haven't.

It really is a masterpiece.

I think it's probably Brian's best vocal arrangement, period. That's my honest opinion about that. It's completely a cappella, and I sang the bass part on that part, though that thing moved around so much, you couldn't even say it was just a bass part; it was the lowest note in the four parts, anyway.

We played that back for the Wrecking Crew in the studio, and it blew their minds. Bill Medley was there to hear that playback, because the Righteous Brothers were recording in and around Studio 3 at Western Recorders. A couple of months back Bill Medley and I had dinner together, and he told me again how much that arrangement of 'The Lord's Prayer' blew his mind, listening to it. If somebody ever wants to hear four-part harmonies done a cappella in a spiritual song, that's the one to listen to."

David Beard on the release of Jan & Dean's rejected 1965 Filet of Soul comedy album

David Beard talks with Phil Miglioratti of Pray For Surf about the September 2017 release of the rejected Filet of Soul album by the Laurel & Hardy duo of Pop Music

The conversation begins with a revealing look at Endless Summer Quarterly before transitioning into David's affection for Jan & Dean and concludes with his perspective of Jan & Dean's rejected version of the 1965 release Filet of Soul:

"It was strange and I liked it! ... a subversive lampooning ... gunfire, cows, a toilet flushing ... Wrecking Crew ... skits ... Jan & Dean lampooning Jan & Dean ... similar to the Beach Boys' Party! album in that it had additional studio banter recorded over the live material, but far more experimental … completely pioneering …

A Prayer? on Beach Boys • 1967 Sunshine Tomorrow

Lament: a passionate expression of grief or sorrow.

Unlike most of the Beach Boys' passionate expression songs, this one is not directed to a friend, a lover or that no-good ex-boyfriend of the singer's dreams.
In this lament, the singer can only be speaking to the one who has the power to "let the wind blow," the authority to "let the moon glow," the causality to "let the grass grow." Without mentioning Almighty God, the singer is nonetheless directing his pleas Godward.

In essence, he is yielding to God's direction; "Thy king come come, thy will be done on earth..." but he also has a plea. He laments the possibility of losing the one he loves ("don't take her out of my life"). Everyone who prays has prayed a similar prayer; sometimes daily. A prayer like this, a passionate petitioning, pleading, to the Lord, is actually a prayer of faith, hope, and love. Faith that God exists and actually hears our prayer. Hope God will respond with the blessing we request. Love for others ("let the poor find money; take away their sorrows; give them sunshine tomorrow") even as he is begging to keep the woman he loves in his life.

Let The Wind Blow. A love song. Poetic expression. But for some, a reminder to pray. Because everything that matters to you, matters to God.

Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.  Philippians 4:6-7Contemporary English Version (CEV)

Let the wind blow
Let the grass grow
But don't let her go
Don't take her out of my life
Don't take her out of my life
Let the moon glow
(Let the moon glow)
(On the fallen snow)
On the fallen snow
(Let the moon glow)
(On the fallen snow)
But I just got to know
(Let me please know oh oh oh)
Know she'll be a part of my life
Know she'll be a part of my life
Forever
Let the bees make honey
Let the poor find money
Take away their sorrows
Give them sunshine tomorrow
But don't take her out of my life
Don't take her out of my life
What would I do without her tell me now
Let the bird sing
With the coming spring
Let the church bells ring
Let the rain fall
Let the grass grow
Let the moon glow
On the fallen snow
But don't take her out of my life
Please keep her a part of my life

Journey to Hell and Back

Pop star’s journey to hell and back

By Charles Gardner, Special to ASSIST News Service
LEEDS, UK (ANS – May 10, 2017) –
A British 70s pop star’s suicide bid went awry when he landed on his feet – quite literally – as he battled in vain to beat the booze!

A distraught John Gaughan jumped out of the third-storey window of his Leeds home onto the concrete below – and miraculously survived, though with severe injuries.
As he was recovering, he called out to God for help – and Jesus came knocking at his door!
“Well, the man was gentle and concerned, and it was just as if he had heard my prayer,” recalled the 63-year-old musician who was once part of supergroup Herman’s Hermits, but is now a pastor also singing and recording songs of praise.
“I suppose he was more of a Good Samaritan; a concerned neighbour. He also happened to be an elder of a nearby church who, in response to a prompting he felt from God, called in to see if I was alright.
“That was the beginning of a long road to healing and freedom. I went to his church and gave my life to the Lord, but I had many setbacks. I had tried to kick the booze for some time prior to my conversion, but it had proved impossible so far.
“I had started off as a teenage tippler and was pretty much addicted by the time my career took off when I was just 19. Friends frogmarched me to a talent contest – when I should have been working – and I got spotted.
“I duly signed up for a series of record deals, including a contract with Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway – leading singer-songwriters of the time. I even joined Herman’s Hermits for a brief period, playing with them on an American tour in the early 70s which included a gig at Madison Square Garden in New York. I am actually on the cover of the live album recorded there.
“I also worked as a solo artist – under the name Bobby Moonshine for a time – but alcohol proved a major obstacle to my progress, and I failed to capitalize on opportunities as a result.
“My new Christian life was also initially hampered by the control alcohol had on me ... but when an
“... evangelist prayed into this situation in Jesus’ name, I felt an immediate cleansing, and was healed right then and there! I’ve not touched a drop of the hard stuff since.
“There’s so much more to my story. I have been to hell and back. But now I’ve had a touch from heaven and God has met my needs in so many ways – financially, emotionally and otherwise. It’s such a privilege to serve my Lord, especially as a pastor myself now.”
John was ordained into the evangelical offshoot of the Episcopal (Anglican) Church in the USA, but has nevertheless stuck to his Yorkshire roots as pastor of the Congregational Church in Driffield, East Yorkshire.
Once belting out hits such as I’m into something good (when all was not so rosy), John now writes, sings and records gospel songs to the God who saved him.

The Rock Star and the ‘Priest’

The Rock Star and the ‘Priest’

How brothers Jon and Tony Anderson went in different directions --
Tony became a pastor and has produced a Christian album along with his wife, Suzanne, and their band, Stop -- while Jon continues as a prog rock legend
By Dan Wooding, Founder of ASSIST News Service

ACCRINGTON, UK (ANS – May 6, 2017)
-- As one of the most recognizable voices in progressive rock and arguably the creative force behind the British super group, Yes, UK-born Jon Anderson has undoubtedly one of the most recognizable voices in rock music.
And now, Anderson, and the various incarnations of Yes, have finally been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 32nd Annual ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on April 7, 2017, and also their version of the group – Yes with Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman -- are touring the world and attracting sell-out crowds.
Anderson was the author and a major inspirational influence behind the series of epics produced by Yes, and his role in creating such complex pieces as “Close to the Edge,” “Awaken,” and especially “The Gates of Delirium” was central to the band’s success.
Additionally, Jon co-authored some the group’s biggest hits, including “I’ve Seen All Good People,” “Roundabout,” and “Owner Of A Lonely Heart,” written primarily by guitarist Trevor Rabin, with contributions to the final version by singer Jon, bassist Chris Squire, and producer, Trevor Horn. It turned out to be their biggest hit.
Not many rock stars come from Accrington
Born John Roy Anderson in the Lancashire town of Accrington on October 25, 1944, to Albert and Kathleen Anderson, who were of Scottish (father) and Irish (mother) ancestry. Anderson dropped the “h” from his first name in 1970. Accrington is a former center of the British cotton and textile machinery industries, but is not exactly known for producing rock stars like Jon Anderson, but it does have a soccer team called Accrington Stanley FC, which plays in League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league system, and despite their lowly stature, Jon, who now lives in the United States, once told me that he is still an avid follower of the team.
In 1962, Jon joined The Warriors, where he and his almost-look-alike brother, Tony, shared the role of vocalists. He quit this band in 1967, released two solo singles in 1968 under the pseudonym Hans Christian Anderson, and then briefly sang for the band, The Gun.
Later, Jon, who once composed a tribute song to his brother, called “Tony and Me,” met the late Yes bassist Chris Squire and joined him in a group originally called Mabel Greer’s Toyshop, which included guitarist Peter Banks.
He then went on to superstardom with Yes, when Anderson, Squire, Pete Banks, drummer Bill Bruford and keyboardist Tony Kaye, launched their eponymous debut album Yes, which was released in 1969.
Among the line-up changes were that Rick Wakeman replaced Kaye in 1971 and Alan White took over the drums from Bruford in 1972, while Steve Howe replaced Pete Banks.
During the years to come, which was now known as the classic period of Yes, Jon was a major creative force and band leader throughout the period (describing himself as the “team captain” and “catalyst,” nicknamed by his musical mates as “Napoleon” for his diminutive stature and strong leadership of the band) and is recognized as one of the main instigators of the series of epics produced by the “prog rock” band at the time.
Yes released 11 critically acclaimed albums (including one live album “Yessongs” and one early compilation “Yesterdays” between 1969 and 1979, including such classic titles as “Fragile” (which contained the band’s first hit “Roundabout”), “Close To The Edge”, “Tales From The Topographic Oceans”, “Relayer” and “Going For The One.”
I have a humorous story about the release of “Fragile,” the first Yes album that keyboard legend, Rick Wakeman, played on after he left The Strawbs, a folk-rock band run by Dave Cousins. Each Yes band member was given a place on the album cover to thank friends who had helped them in their careers, and Rick accidentally gave me two mentions, while Elton John and David Bowie only got one. If you happened to still have that cover, check out the insert from Rick. He also, for some reason, thanks his dog, who is pictured.
On May 13, 2008, Jon suffered a severe asthma attack which required a stay in hospital and that ended his time with Yes. but as he slowly recovered, and he continued with a solo career, and also did a series of concerts with his old friend, Rick Wakeman, who had by now also left the band once again.
A Different Direction
At around the same time, his older brother, Tony, began moving in a completely different direction. He made a commitment to Jesus Christ, and eventually became an Elim Pentecostal Church minister on the beautiful Isle of Wight located off the British mainland – although Jon would tell people that Tony had become a “priest.”
In the meantime, Tony married his wife Sue (Suzanne), and and eventually retired from that church and the two of them continue to minister as they share the Gospel and sing their musics to a wide variety of audiences.
“We both write songs and we’ve always loved worshiping the Lord and that’s the key to what we now do,” he told me in a trans-Atlantic interview some time back. “We go out speaking at different churches and often when we do, we take the songs that the Lord has given us to help support the Word that we’re sharing. Through all of this, I have learned that you never lose anything when you come to Jesus.
Why Tony gave up rock and roll -- at least for a time
Tony smiled and then added, “I gave up the whole rock and roll business to follow Christ and yet, a few years ago, the Lord told me, ‘You’re going to form a rock band so you can go out to the pubs and clubs and sing about Me.’ So, we’ve been going into prisons on the Isle of Wight and we sing at local pubs, community events and uphold the church outreaches… nothing big; we’re just so happy to get out there and sing.’”
In their latest musical project, Tony and Sue have released a new Christian reflective CD, with their band, Stop, called "Songs of Eshcol." [Eshcol was one of three Amorite confederates of Abram in the Hebron area, who joined their forces with those of Abraham in pursuit of King Chedorlaomer and his armies who had taken Abram’s nephew Lot and others as captives. (Genesis 14:13-24)
Sue told me, “We have also produced a seasonal song called ‘Christmas Blu’, the latter with our band Stop.” [For more information either of these recordings, just send an e-mail to Sue at stopanderson41@gmail.com, and if you are with a radio stations and would like to feature this music, she can give you details].
I then asked Tony if, as he looked quite a bit like his legendary brother, people ever recognized him, and he replied, “Occasionally someone will say, ‘You remind me of someone’ and I tell them who that ‘someone’ might be. And also, through the years, I’d be at a cafe having a coffee and I’d be thinking about how I could share the gospel with someone and then one of Jon’s song will just come on the radio and I’ll say, ‘That’s my brother singing.’ Then, I’ll tell them my story and it’s an opportunity to share about Jesus. Thank you Jon, for giving me that opportunity!
“We love Jon so much and Sue and I saw him last month in Bournemouth where he was playing as part of ARW (Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman), and I had a wonderful couple of hours reminiscing with him, while Sue chatted with Jon’s wife, Jane. It was a really special time.”
Jon's voice is as good as ever
Tony said that his brother’s voice was quite incredible, and added, “The Grace of God was evident. Even after his health set-backs, he sounded just like he did as a teenager. We just love each other to bits. When you’re as close as Jon and I, nothing can separate us.”
Tony and Sue also recently made a nostalgic visit to Accrington, where they met up with older brother, Stuart Anderson, and his wife, Marilyn, and enjoyed some “pub grub” in the town where the boys were all born.
Spiritual tone to Jon’s music
I told Tony that I’d noticed that there was quite a spiritual tone to his brother’s music these days.
“Yes, there is,” he replied. ‘He wrote a song called ‘Just One Man’ which is all about Jesus. He wrote it just after our sister Joy had died and he sent me a message saying, ‘Tony. I’m sending you a lovely song about Jesus. You’ll love it.’ I’ve actually taken those words to a service or two because I said, ‘I just want to read you some beautiful words that my brother wrote.’ There are so many people praying for Jon and I do believe that he’s getting closer and closer to that time when he will say, ‘I am a Christian too.’”
Jon has also worked with the Contemporary Christian music band 4HIM, and in 1999, his vocal was featured on the song “The Only Thing I Need,” which appeared on a “various artists” CD entitled Streams.

Note: Jon’s close band-mate, Rick Wakeman, has been a friend of mine for around 50 years now, and recently my authorized biography of Rick called “Caped Crusader, Rick Wakeman in the 1970's,” has been updated from the original version, re-released and also features material about Jon Anderson and Yes during that period. It carries a foreword by Sir Elton John and to order a copy, please go to: https://www.amazon.com/Caped-Crusader-Rick-Wakeman-1970s/dp/1908728302.
